Growth responses to competitive shocks : Market structure dynamics under liberalisation
نویسنده
چکیده
Liberalisation transforms market structures through the responses of incumbent firms and entrants to freedom of choice. Market shares tend to turn more volatile, and the agility and competitiveness of small, as against large, firms determine whether markets grow more concentrated, or less. We analyse the way these processes played out in Indian manufacturing industries over the 17-year period from 1981, spanning the domestic liberalisation of 1985 and the more comprehensive reforms of 1991. An observer looking at summary measures of market concentration might conclude that not much happened under either liberalisation episode. In fact, market share grew significantly more turbulent, and the relationship between market share growth and initial share changed considerably. Domestic and comprehensive liberalisation saw different types of course corrections in these processes. But in both liberalisation episodes they tended to offset one another in their impact on observed market concentration, which therefore, changed little. JEL Codes: L19, L60, C21, C22

Short-run Price-Inventory Dynamics in World Crude Oil Market under Different Shocks
This paper explores the short-run price-inventory dynamics in the presence of different shocks. Classical competitive storage model states that inventory decision considers both current and future market condition, and thus interacts with spot and expected future spot prices. We study competitive storage holding in an equilibrium framework, focusing on the dynamic response of price and inventor...
متن کاملWhat drives competition between banks? Cross-country analysis of liberalised Greek and Cypriot banking
This study offers an application of Infinite dimension VAR technique in measuring the performance of Greek and Cypriot financial market efficiency. The model aims to explore the forces driving the performance of a large banks proxy by returns on FTSE/ATHEX20 and FTSE/ATHEX BANKS stock indices during the period of 1997–2009. IVAR analysis can be used as either an alternative or complement to rat...

In this study, we model the long-term and dynamic relationships between spot oil and exchange rates and gas prices by applying the Markov switching vector self-regression model in three regional gas markets in USA, Europe and Asia. Price behavior is analyzed using Bayesian estimation to take into account the transition from an existing relationship and the delayed and recurring effects of pric...
